‘Ban raw mineral exports’

By SANFROSSA MANYINDA

GOVERNMENT should ban exports of unrefined minerals to reap more benefits in taxes and create jobs for the locals, a mining expert Edward Simukonda has said.

Tanzania had turned around its economic fortunes as a result of such policies, Mr Simukonda said in an interview.

He said banning exports of raw minerals would help benefit the country’s economy through increased domestic processing and refining which create jobs.

Mr Simukonda said the ore came with a lot of other minerals with them that the country had been losing for many years now.

He said that refining the minerals locally before they were exported would also benefit Zambians.

“We have since 1972 been exporting unrefined minerals thereby leaving us at a loss as a country. We have been losing a lot of national revenue by doing so and we have not seen much effort or interest to stop the trend,” he said.

Mr Simukonda also noted that a ban of this kind of export would also allow for the processing which would benefit thousands of citizens.

He said the earlier Government realised the importance of taking such a step the better it would be for the country.
