REVOKE INACTIVE MINING LICENCES, STATE URGED

By PETER SICHALI

GOVERNMENT should revoke inactive mining licences so as to allow serious investors, Zambia Jubilee Coalition (ZJC) Secretary General Kwaela Mwanza has said.

Mr Mwanza said the country’s economy had suffered setbacks because of the Coronavirus outbreak and there was need for serious investors for the economy to recover.

He said the country has a lot of Mineral resources that can help boost the country’s economy if only serious investors are given licenses.

Mr Mwanza said there were a lot of dormant mining licences which have retarded the development of the sector.

“We would want to appeal to government to cancel all dormant   licenses so that serious investors are engaged,” Mr Mwanza said.

He said the Ministry of Mines should ensure that there is proof that those being awarded mining licenses have the capacity to run the mines.

He said Zambia has a lot of mineral resources that can  turn around the economy if serious investors are engaged.

“The country has mineral resources and what we need now are serious investors , especially now that the economic growth has slowed down due to Covid-19,” he said.

Mr Mwanza said he was disappointed that non serious license holders are still holding on to licences despite presidential directive to cancel dormant licences.
