FORMER ASTRA TO BE FENCED OFF

By ROGERS KALERO

THE owner of the land at the former Astra Cinema will hopefully fence off the property to stop street children and other people from using it as a toilet and other mischievous activities,” Town Clerk Mbulo Seke has said.

Mr Seke engaged the owner of the property after public outcry especially from booth operators that the street children were using the open space as a toilet.

He said he was hopeful that the owner of the property would move in quickly to fence off the plot.

Mr Seke was speaking in an interview with the Daily Nation.

Late last month, the council said it would liaise with the owner of the land at the former Astra so that he could completely fence it off.

The mobile booth operators told the Daily Nation that the street children were sometimes having sex during day at the same place.

Mr Seke said the former Astra was a private property, but the local authority would liaise with the owner on the possibilities of completely fencing the place to curb nuisances.

But some residents said the problem of street children had become a very complicated issue which needed to be addressed with concerted efforts.

Mr Stephen Chanda said there were a lot of complex issues in addressing the problem of street children especially that the children were not eager to be empowered but were happy with being given alms
