PROMOTE NATIONAL HERITAGE – PRESIDENT EDGAR LUNGU

By PRISCA LUMINGU in Chitambo

PRESIDENT Edgar Lungu says there is need to enhance diversification and adding value to all national heritage sites because for some time tourism has largely been focused on the Victoria Falls and national parks.

President Lungu said the Patriotic Front government recognises tourism as a potential economic sector to stimulate economic growth.

He said tourism creates socioeconomic benefits in form of foreign exchange earnings, income generation, and employment opportunities for the people and road development among other things.

Mr Lungu was speaking during the official opening of the visitors information centre at the David Livingstone memorial national site where Dr. Livingstone’s heart is buried in Chipundu village of Chitambo.

Speaking earlier, Tourism and Arts Minister Ronald Chitotela disclosed that he had already signed the translocation of over 220 buffaloes and over 70 Zebras to the northern circuit in the promotion of wildlife restocking programme aimed at enhancing tourism.

The British High Commissioner to Zambia Nicolas Woolley said the history that Zambia shares with the UK had resulted in so many partnerships between the two countries.

Giving a vote of thanks, Chief Chitambo assured that his chiefdom would guard the site jealously and ensure that maximum benefits reach the local community.
