Let us remain united as we celebrate African Freedom Day

Dear Editor,

YESTERDAY, May 25, Zambia joined the rest of the continent in celebrating Africa Freedom Day, a day when we remember the role our forefathers played in the liberation of Africa by sacrificing their lives to bring the continent to what it is today.

If it was not for the great sons of the continent who fought against the colonial masters, Africa would have not been what it is today and for that, we keep saluting them because we are enjoying from the sacrifices made by our forefathers, the Freedom Fighters.

We all know the role that Zambia played in the fight for independence of many African states and it’s only right for us to pay a glowing tribute to our Freedom Fighters among them, our founding President Dr. Kenneth David Kaunda and many of his colleagues.

However, as we celebrate this day as a country, we should not allow the efforts our freedom fighters made by throwing away this freedom we have continued to enjoy in view of the forthcoming general elections slated for August 12, 2021.

We have noticed that with sadness by some political players with the tendency of politicising such days as the Africa Freedom Day. This day should unite us further as a nation. We should put on the Zambian flag first and put our political differences aside but let us remain united because it is through unity that we shall take this country forward.

As we approach the election date, may we conduct violent-free campaigns by preaching love, peace and unity and above all, let us promote the One Zambia One Nation chorus. Let us not be divided because of an election. I therefore call upon all political players to encourage their members to engage in objective campaigns devoid of name calling and personal attacks. At the end of the day we have a country to preserve for the future generations. United we stand and divided we fall.
