By KETRA KALUNGA

ZAMBIA is among the top six countries in Africa with the highest new Covid-19 cases as the country recorded 558 new cases in the last 24 hours.

This is the highest number recorded in over two months since the country came out of the second wave, Ministry of Health Permanent Secretary – Technical Services Kennedy Malama has said.

He said the number of people on oxygen therapy had swelled to 77 while one person died at Levy Mwanawasa Hospital in Lusaka.

Meanwhile, Dr Malama dismissed assertions by some people that Government was falsifying Covid-19 figure to stop the opposition political parties from holding rallies during the campaign period.

He said during the Covid-19 update that the information from Government was based on evidence and tests conducted.

Dr. Malama said collective information was being gathered and given to the stakeholders who were the Zambians so that they could take appropriate action.

He also said that the Zambia Medicines Regulatory Authority (ZAMRA) has now approved five Covid-19 vaccines for use in Zambia.

Dr. Malama said the approved vaccines for Zambia are Sinopharm (Vero Cells), Jansen (Johnson & Johnson), AstraZeneca Covishield, AZD 1222 5 – Korean AstraZeneca and the Pfizer Biotech.
