UPND challenges police to end political violence

By KETRA KALUNGA

THE laws we have are sufficient not to have allowed for this escalation of violence in the country, the United Party for National Development (UPND) has  said.

UPND spokesperson, Cornelius Mweetwa said the police have the capacity to deal with any form of violence but are restricted in the way they apply the law because of political interference.

Mr. Mweetwa said in an interview the police are partly to blame for all the drama about the escalation of violence in the country because they have allowed themselves to be influenced politically.

“The laws we have are sufficient not to have allowed for this escalation of violence, the police have got capacity to deal with this but because of political interference, they are restricted in the way they apply the law,” he said.

Mr. Mweetwa was reacting to the recent violence in Lusaka’s Mandevu constituency between the UPND and PF cadres which led to damage of property.

And Mr. Mweetwa said the UPND is on equal terms with political players advocating for violent free campaigns and elections.
