UPND DENIES PROMISING ZAMBIAN MINES TO OPPENHEIMER GROUP

By NATION REPORTER

THE UPND has denied promising the Oppenheimer Mining Group of South Africa to hand over Zambian mines if it forms Government after the August 12 elections.

Social media reports suggest the Oppenheimer Mining Company allegedly entered into a legally binding agreement 12 years ago that saw the UPND receive financial support and now campaign vehicles.

The South Africa-based group has reportedly handed over campaign vehicles to UPND and assured the party of total financial support provided they honour the mining agreement between the two parties.
Among the conditions the group and UPND have entered into are that the takeover of the mines by government should be reversed upon winning the August general elections.

UPND has in return reportedly assured the Oppenheimer group that it would reverse the decision to take over the mines the moment it wins so that the mines were left in foreign hands.

The Oppenheimer group reportedly expressed confidence that the Oppenheimer Mining Company would work very well with the UPND in government in as far as mining was concerned.

Oppenheimer Mining Company allegedly committed to take over the running of KCM and other mines in the country once the UPND forms government.

When contacted, UPND spokesperson, Cornelius Mweetwa refuted the claims saying it was all propaganda against the party.

“As a country we should be focusing on problems the Zambian people are facing. This is just propaganda,” he said.
