A NUMBER of teachers in schools have tested positive for coronavirus and some of them have died, the National Action for Quality Education (NAQEZ) has disclosed.
NAQEZ director Aaron Chansa has therefore called on the Ministry of Health to be inspecting schools and ensure that preventive measures are adhered to once schools reopen after 21 days.
He also called on the corporate world to consider donating hand sanitisers to schools.
And NAQEZ has accepted the closure of schools but advised the Ministry of General Education to change the curriculum and handle this year’s exams differently by removing subjects to be covered.
Speaking in an interview, Mr Chansa welcomed the move by Government to close schools amid the rising cases of Covid-19. He said that the school curriculum has once again been disturbed hence the need for the government through the Ministry of General Education to change the way it will handle exams. Mr Chansa feels that the ministry should remove some topics which are irrelevant.
“I am of the view that the Ministry of General Education should handle examinations differently by only encompassing some few topics that are relevant because some topics are irrelevant,” he said.
Government has announced the closure of primary and secondary schools for 21 days.
Secretary to Cabinet Dr Simon Miti announced that pre, primary and secondary schools will be closed for 21 days while universities and colleges will only conduct online sessions for one month.
He also said that bars, taverns and casinos will only operate over the weekend from Friday to Sunday from 1800 hours to 2200 hours and places of worship have only been allowed to meet for four hours.
Dr Miti also directed that funerals to only have 50 mourners and the same applies to weddings and other gatherings which were subject to approval by health authorities.
This directive came into effect yesterday.
