UPND has reportedly sent money to all provinces for its members to travel to Lusaka to stage a sendoff to President Kaunda in a quest to make up for Mr Hakainde Hichilema’s failure to attend the State funeral on Friday.
It is believed UPND has instructed its members to parade along the road leading to Woodlands Stadium in red despite the government banning party regalia at the former president’s funeral.
This follows public condemnation of the UPND president, Mr Hichilema’s failure to attend the State funeral when he was invited.
Inside sources told the Daily Nation that the cadres are expected in Lusaka today.
According to the source, members, mostly youths, were rounded up yesterday especially on the Copperbelt and instructed to travel.
“Tomorrow, you are likely see crowds of UPND members who will line up along the road leading to Woodlands Stadium where KK’s body will be going.
“As we are talking to you, money has already been sent to our leaders in nearby provinces to book buses and make sure these people start off for Lusaka,” the source said. However when contacted, UPND refused to comment.
Earlier in the week, UPND claimed that they were not invited to the state funeral hence their leader, Mr Hichilema not showing up.
However, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting Permanent Secretary Amos Malupenga rubbished the claims, saying that Mr Hichilema was invited.
Meanwhile, Inspector General of Police, Kakoma Kanganja has warned against illegal assemblies and party regalia at the Dr Kaunda’s funeral service today.
Mr Kanganja said enough police officers had been deployed to deal with any lawlessness at the funeral.
