LAZ SLAMS UNLAWFUL UPND’S ANTI-PF CAMPAIGN ADVERT

By NATION REPORTER

A POLITICAL campaign video attributed to the United Party for National Development (UPND) depicting an alleged violent PF campaign offends provisions of the law as it is both intimidatory and inciteful, the Law Association of Zambia (LAZ) has said.

LAZ has also called on the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) to ensure that any political party or individual found wanting should be held accountable.

LAZ Honorary Secretary, Sokwane Chilembo said of similar concern were tribal statements attributed to Ms. Buumba Malambo, a member of the UPND.

Mr Chilembo said the tribal comments referred to fall foul of the law.

He said the Constitution in Article 60(3)(a) and (b) prohibits the practice of tribalism and abhors intimidation.

“The rule of law applies across the board to all political parties,” he said in a statement.

Mr Chilembo said the imagery depicted and the narration contained in a political campaign video attributed to UPND enjoying wide circulation on various social media platforms was unlawful.

“This clear prescription is echoed in Section 14 and 15 of the Electoral Process Act, 2016,” he said.

Mr Chilembo urged the UPND and other political parties to be mindful of the law for the remainder of the campaign period.

He also called on ECZ to scrutinise campaign activities of all political parties and ensure that any political party or individual found wanting should be held accountable.
