VIRTUAL FARMERS MARKET LAUNCHED

The World Food Programme (WFP), Digital PYGO and Zambia National Commercial Bank (ZANACO) have launched a virtual farmers market known as “MAANO”.

Ministry of Agriculture Permanent Secretary, Songowayo Zyambo says the platform has potential to bridge the information gap which exists between farmers and traders.

Mr. Zyambo was speaking at the launch of the virtual farmers market in Lusaka yesterday.

He appealed to agricultural extension officers and players in the agriculture industry to take keen interest in the virtual app and assist in publicising the application.

And World Food Programme(WFP), Country Representative, Jennifer Bitonde says the app offers hope for smallholder famers whose market access has been hampered by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Farmers can now sell their produce from their homes without physically going to congested traditional markets to look for buyers,” Ms Bitonde stated.  Speaking at the launch, ZANACO Chief Excellency Officer, Mukwandi Chibesakunda said supporting the growth of the agriculture sector is a priority for the bank.

“As a Bank, we understand the critical role that the agriculture sector plays in supporting the growth of our economy and particularly in the creation of employment,” he said. – ZANIS
