HAKAINDE HICHILEMA WARNS ECZ

By KALOBWE BWALYA

ELECTIONS will continue being disputed if the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) does not exhibit transparency and fairness from the onset, UPND president Hakainde Hichilema has said.

And Patriotic Front (PF) Secretary General Davies Mwila said the PF party has committed its members not to get involved in any violence even when they are proved.

Apart from President Lungu, Socialist Party leader Fred M’membe and  MMD president, Nevers Mumba also did not attend the conference but were represented by other party officials.

Mr Hichilema said ECZ must be transparent in the manner it handles the elections in the country, as elections should be determined by Zambians.

Meanwhile, the Commonwealth and the United Nations (UN) have called on political parties to maintain peace as the country heads to the polls on August 12.

Speaking during the conference, ZCID Board chairperson Jackson Silavwe said political and tribal violence continue to be a problem in the country.

Church Mother bodies representative Paul Mususu noted that mere condemnation of political violence is not enough and that there is need to seek the root causes as well as finding lasting solutions to the vice.
