UPND DENIES LINKS WITH GAY MOVEMENT

By ADRIAN MWANZA

THE UPND has denied any involvement with the Africa Liberal Network which is pushing for the promotion of gays and lesbians in Zambia.

According to a letter acquired by the Daily Nation, Liberal Network president Gilbert Noël Ouédraogo promised to give the UPND US$720, 000 for campaigns if the opposition would sway the nation away from its Christian values and put in place liberal and secular ethos.

Mr Ouédraogo said he was happy to hear the UPND’s deep commitment to remove any mention of Christian values from the Zambian constitution including the explicit prosecutions against homosexuality, sodomy and bestiality should its candidate Mr Hakainde Hichilema becomes president in 2021. “As we have during previous campaigns, it is with great pleasure that we accept your application for funding and will provide you with the sum of US$720, 000 to support your campaign which we hope will change the face of the republic of Zambia away from its Christian values,” Mr Ouédraogo wrote.

He said that he was aware that the UPND shared a firm belief as laid out by the official position and statement of the executive committee which supported the rights of lesbians, gays, bisexual, transgender and other sexual minorities.

However, UPND spokesperson Cornelius Mweetwa said the accusations were fake and was just cheap propaganda by the Patriotic Front. Mr Mweetwa said that instead of concentrating on serious issues like the high poverty levels they were trying to malign the UPND.
