By BUUMBA CHIMBULU

OVER 29, 523.31 grammes of gold has been bought from the artisanal and small-scale miners by the Zambia Gold Company Limited (ZGCL) from the time it started operations last year in January.

The year to-date production for 2021 was currently at 38, 320.78 grammes of gold, as ZGCL continues to undertake gold explorations and mining in Kasenseli area in an effort to upscale production.

ZGCL Project Manager, Charles Mjumpi, explained that the total cumulative quantity of gold so far from the time the company commenced operations in January last year was 29, 523.31 grammes.

Mr Mjumpi indicated that the gold was bought from the artisanal and small-scale miners as a way of supporting them.

He said this in Mwinilunga when he handled over desks to the District Education Board Secretary.

He said the firm was carrying out gold explorations and mining activities in Mwinilunga’s Kasenseli area.

Mr Mjumpi said the company would soon be conducting explorations in Luano Valley and Rufunsa.

“The company is mandated to explore and develop the gold sub-sector and ensure that the minerals are exploited to the maximum benefit of the country and the people of Zambia,” he said.

Meanwhile, ZGCL handed over 160 three-seater combo desks and building materials to the Mwinilunga District Education valued at K300,  000.

On the items, Mr Mjumpi said they would be distributed to schools in Kanogensha and Chibwika chiefdoms, where access to quality education facilities had been a challenge.

He stated that ZGCL recognised that social, economic and environmental responsibilities were integral to its business and that it aimed to demonstrate those responsibilities through actions and within corporate policies.

“Further, as ZGCL, we do appreciate that we are a business entity that requires to make profit for shareholders as well as to help us sustain

our operations.

“However, we genuinely believe that to achieve this objective in a sustainable way, our economic activities must ultimately serve the interests of society,” Mr Mjumpi said.
