PRESIDENT-ELECT Hakainde Hichilema, has assured diplomats accredited to Zambia that his Government will guarantee freedoms to citizens and urged them to feel free to engage with the opposition.
Mr Hichilema, who will be sworn in next Tuesday said under his administration, human rights, freedoms and liberties will be guaranteed. He was speaking when he met four diplomats at his home in Lusaka yesterday.
Mr Hichilema met with the Germany Ambassador, Anne Wagner-Mitchell, Finland Ambassador, Pirjo Suomela-Chowdhury and the Swedish Ambassador to Zambia, Antonio Maggiore. This is contained a statement issued to the Daily Nation by press secretary in the office of the President-elect, Brian Mwiinga. Mr Hichilema said diplomats would be allowed to freely engage with any citizen including the opposition to get views on how the new Government is administering the affairs of the country.
He said his incoming Government recognised that when human rights, freedoms and liberties were upheld, the country would attract investment and goodwill and in turn promote the UPND’s economic vision. “You are free to meet anyone, talk to anyone and ask about our leadership and no one from our end will call you to ask why because we will ensure total freedom for our citizens while delivering economic development as that is what they voted for,” President-elect Hichilema said.
