UNIONS TO ENGAGE NEW GOVT OVER DEBT SWAP

By ADRIAN MWANZA

PUBLIC service workers unions will engage the new government on the debt swap which was implemented by the Patriotic Front (PF) government.

A representative of the 15 public service workers unions, Mr Newman Bubala, said the unions were just waiting for the new President, MrHakainde Hichilema, to be sworn in so that they could meet and discuss the matter at length.

Mr Bubala said that there was no need for civil servants to panic after the regime change because they would sit and explain how the decision was arrived at with the previous regime.

He said that he was sure that they would come to an understanding because the debt swap was a relief to the civil servants who at the time were highly indebted.

“It is one of the productive policies that was put in place by the previous regime and I hope we are going to explain to the new government so that they fully understand the rationale,” he said

Mr Bubala called on the new government to be magnanimous when dealing with the matter but was quick to say the new President understood the plight of workers.
