LAZ BACKS LEGAL REFORMS

By PETER SICHALI

THE Law Association of Zambia (LAZ) will support legal reforms that will be carried out by the new administration, LAZ President Abyudi Shonga has said.

President Hakainde Hichilema in his address to Parliament yesterday said his administration will carry out reforms on the Electoral Processes Act to strengthen the independence of the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) and the Public Order Act.

But Mr Shonga said the independence of the ECZ was guaranteed in constitution.

Mr Shonga, who described the Presidential address as encouraging, said LAZ will continue defending the critical institution of governance.

“LAZ has repeatedly stood up for critical institutions of governance. These need to be continually assessed and strengthened where necessary. ECZ is one such institution. Its independence is guaranteed in the Constitution,” Mr Shonga said.

He said has always called for proper administration of the Public Order Act.

“We are also on record as calling for proper administration of the Public Order Act. The reforms alluded to by the President, therefore, have our support,” Mr Shonga said.
