Speaker orders govt to explain political violence

By OLIVER SAMBOKO

SPEAKER of Parliament Nelly Mutti has directed Home Affairs Minister Jack Mwiimbu to issue a ministerial statement not later than Tuesday next week on Government position on the ongoing political violence perpetuated by suspected UPND cadres.

This follows a point of order raised by PF Chief Whip and Shiwang’andu MP Stephen Kampyongo who wanted to know what the government is doing to stop the act.

Mr Kampyongo, who referred to the Daily Nation edition of Tuesday, September 21, and Wednesday, September 22, 2021, where it was reported that UPND cadres ambushed the PF secretariat in an attempt to disrupt a press conference

He said it is in public domain that after being thwarted by PF youths who were manning the premises, the cadres went on rampage beating up innocent people in town and causing destruction to property.

Mr Kampyongo also said in some parts of the country PF members who stood in the last election and are attending to petitions are being harassed and abused.

He said the new Government should ensure that the country is governed under the rule of law

Mr Kampyongo said Government should curb the political violence to make the country safe for everyone.

He said Zambians are one and therefore the need to co-exist regardless of which party one belongs to.

And Mr Mwiimbu warned cadres belonging to both the ruling and opposition political parties to immediately stop engaging in violence or face the wrath of the law.

Mr Mwiimbu told the Daily Nation that he was dismayed by the increasing violent activities involving political cadres attacking opponents and innocent citizens particularly in Lusaka.
