Saviour Chishimba faces defamation charge

POLICE have charged United Progressive Party president Saviour Chishimba with the offence of defamation when he made disparaging remarks against President Edgar Lungu contrary to the Constitution of Zambia.

Police spokesperson Esther Katongo announced yesterday that Dr Chishimba, who was arrested on Thursday in Lusaka has been charged with defamation of the President contrary to section 69 of the Penal Code Cap 87 of the Laws of Zambia.

“Dr Saviour Chishimba, the UPP President has been charged with the Offence of Defamation of President contrary to section 69 of the Penal Code Cap 87 of the Laws of Zambia.  “He is still in police custody and is scheduled to appear in court within the course of next week,” she said.

Ms Katongo said Dr Chishimba, who was arrested on Thursday afternoon, would remain in custody until next week when he was expected to appear before the courts.

She explained that Dr Chishimba was arrested for defaming President Lungu during events which occurred around 1st July, 2017 and 8th July 2017 in Lusaka.

The opposition leader was picked up from Diamond Television station

 premises where he had been appearing for a programme.

He has been at the centre of numerous corruption cases as both the complainant and suspected offender when he appeared at the Anti-Corruption Commission when he accused some Cabinet Ministers of acting against the law.

He has however also appeared before ACC on corruption allegations involving the period he was board chairperson at the Olympic Development Youth Centre in Lusaka.

Dr Chishimba, of Lusaka’s Makeni residential area earlier got a warn and caution statement from police, but that the police have now charged him the offence of defamation of the President.
