INSPECTOR General of police Kakoma Kanganja should motivate hardworking junior officers with promotion so that they are not infiltrated by the cartel and get tempted to engage in wrongdoing, says former UPND deputy spokesperson Edwin Lifwekelo.

Mr Lifwekelo urged Mr Kanganja to investigate perceived corruption allegations in the police service.

He said one sure way of motivating the men and women in uniform would be through constant promotion for deserving officers.

In a statement availed to the Daily Nation yesterday, Mr Lifwekelo said it was not in order to keep deserving police officers in the same rank for more than five to 10 years.

“Let us investigate why there is perceived corruption in the police service. We must not allow enemies of government to infiltrate our security wings simply for not doing what is right,

“One sure way we can motivate our men and women in uniform is through constant promotion of our deserving men and women in uniform” he said.

He said the scenario that happened in the 2006 Presidential elections were almost the entire police command at State House voted against late President Levy Mwanawasa should be avoided.

Mr Lifwekelo has commended government for endeavouring to improve the living conditions of police officers particularly in housing although more needed to be done.

He said according to his investigations the last time the police service witnessed massive promotions was during the tenure of former Inspector General Ephraim Mateyo who is now North-Western Province Permanent Secretary and challenged anyone who disputed this fact to do an inventory.

Mr Lifwekelo encouraged the private sector to work with government and assist the police service in any way possible.

He observed that some furniture being used by the police were from first republican President Dr Kenneth Kaunda’s era.
