MAIZE PRICE CHEERS SMALL-SCALE FARMERS

By PETER SICHALI

THE Food Reserve Agency (FRA) maize buying price of K150 per 50 kg will boost maize production among small-scale farmers, Small-Scale Farmers Development Agency Executive Director Boyd Moobwe has said.

Mr Moobwe said the 2021 crop marketing season was a morale booster for small-scale farmers.

He said the K150 per 50 kg bag of maize would benefit small-scale farmers especially those that are on the Farmer Input Support Programme (FISP).

“We have welcomed the FRA maize buying price of K150 per 50 kg and wish to commend the the authorities for taking into consideration the plight of small-scale farmers,” Mr Moobwe said. Mr Moobwe however said there was need for Government to stabilise the price of farming inputs such as seed and fertiliser to enable farmers get maximum profits from their produce. He said the prices of fertiliser on the open market was exorbitant and there was need for Government to come up with means of ensuring that prices were reduced.
