POLICE SUMMON SIAVONGA FISHING RIG OWNER

THE Zambia Police have summoned the operator of the fishing rig used by the six Seventh Day Adventist Church (SDA) youths who drowned on Lake Kariba in Siavonga on Saturday.

The six youths sneaked out of the church youth camp and went on a fishing rig parked near the shore of Lake Kariba but jumped into the water after the rig was moved onto the lake, causing them to drown.

Zambia Police Spokesperson Rae Hamoonga said investigations were ongoing on what exactly transpired.

Mr Hamoonga has explained that five bodies were retrieved on Saturday   while the sixth was retrieved yesterday afternoon by a combined team of Zambia Police, Army Marine and Fire brigade Officers.

Mr. Hamoonga named the deceased as Goodson Hamaila aged 23, Rodwell Chileshe aged 25, Zebron Shikambo and Ronald Libuku aged 23, all of Lusaka’s John Laing Compound. Others are Niza Muchiliba aged 18 and Allan Mwaangaboth of Kanyama Compound in Lusaka.

He disclosed that the six met their fate when they went to the lake and decided to get on a fishing rig that was parked on the banks of the lake and that when the Coxswain decided to move the rig onto the lake, they jumped off and attempted to swim back to the shore and drowned in the process.
