THE notorious Jerabos of the Copperbelt have invaded Kasempa district raising concern with the high rise of illegal mining activities across the district, says council chairperson Stanley Kaindu.

Mr Kaindu told the Daily Nation in an interview that there was a lot of illegal mining activities in the district which if left for development.

Mr Kaindu bemoaned the growing population of illegal miners popularly known as “Jerabos” looting the unexplored mineral wealth which action was not benefitting the locals. “We are very much concerned as a council with these mining activities in the district,

“A lot of wealth is going outside the district without the local people benefitting from it,” Mr Kaindu said.

He explained that most of the illegal miners were in gold, copper and other semi-precious minerals.

The civic leader also noted that the illegal miners were putting themselves at a health risk as they failed to provide protective measures to their workers.

“And that is saddest part because their workers do the work without protective clothing, and that puts them at risk,” he said.

He appealed to government through the Ministry of Mines to quickly move in before the minerals were looted by unscrupulous people.
