Kitwe Mayor calms down tempers

BY ROGERS KALERO

KITWE City Council (KCC) will take decisive action tol bring sanity in the city after its first  full council meeting on Monday following the election of the Mayor and new Councillors, Kitwe Mayor Mpasa Mwaya has said.

One of the issues to be table would be removal of the temporal station on Kabelenga avenue which was put up to pave way for the rehabilitation of the road on Oxford avenue.

Earlier before Ms Mwaya could address members of the community and the church, tempers flared with some members of the business community telling the Parklands ward councillor Felix Malasha not to waste their time, but to tell them the way forward.

Ms Mwaya said the council was aware of the various challenges the city was facing which needed to be addressed but had been tied up because it needed to put up resolutions in the council meeting before implementing anything.

Ms Mwaya was speaking yesterday at Sacred Heart Parish of the Catholic Church where the Catholic church , business community and other stakeholders have been demanding the removal of the temporal station.

The Catholic Church and the business community are not happy over the council’s failure to remove the temporal station which initially was supposed to be there for six months , but had been there for over two years.

“I understand that you are fatigued as a church and business community, but we could not come up with anything without going through a council full meeting. I am promising you that we will take a number of actions after the full council meeting coming up on Monday to bring sanity in the city

“I agree with you that the situation on this road is not good because of the temporal bus station and business has been affected, the children from Sacred Heart Secondary school are disturbed and psychologically disturbed by call boys,’’ Ms Mpasa said.

Victor Chimuka Operations Manager at Fedex told Mr Malasha, who is also Deputy Mayor to tell the business community the way forward.

And later before the Mayor calmed down the tempers, Kitwe District Administrative Officer (DAO) Isidore Tebulo said there was no need to waste time taking the matter to the full council meeting, saying it was a temporal bus station which should just be removed without taking it to the full council meeting.

“This is a very simple issue. Since it is a temporal thing, you don’t need to take it to the full council meeting, just remove it,’’ Mr Tebulo said.
