A LUSAKA-based lawyer has appeared in the Lusaka Magistrate’s Court for allegedly stealing K172, 916 belonging to his client.

Maurice Mwango Chaiwila has since been charged with one count of theft by agent, contrary to Section 280 (b) (c) of the Penal Code Chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia.

Chaiwila, 48, of house number 441a/125/A Mungwerere road in Lusaka, was scheduled to take plea on Wednesday before Magistrate Greenwell Malumani but was not before court and the case was adjourned to today.

According to the indictment, it is alleged that between September 1, 2016 and March 10, 2017, Chaiwila stole K172, 916.00 cash which was entrusted to him by Ms Munta Mwenya Machisa.

Ms. Machisa instructed Chaiwila to receive the money from Zanaco on her behalf and deliver it to her.

In another court, two UPND cadres have been committed to the High Court for murder.

This was after Magistrate Judy Chiyayika dismissed an application by the accused persons for their matter to be referred to the Constitutional Court for alleged abuse of their human rights.

Ms. Chiyayika said her hands were tied as she did not have jurisdiction to entertain the application and that the certificate of committal was ready.

This is in a case in which Febian Lubona and James Banda, both 23, have been accused of murdering Steven Kalipa on April 2, 2017, after the planned UPND rally slated for Twashuka ground in Kanyama flopped.
