Commonwealth University reacts to GBM honorary doctorate degree

CLARIFICATIONS

Our attention has been drawn to a publication in the Daily Nation Newspaper of August 1, 2017 regarding the honorary doctorate degree conferred on Dr Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba, the CEO of G.B.M. Group of Companies.

We consider this clarification necessary so as to put the records straight. The seminar fee, just as the publication noted, is for delegates participating in the seminar.

The seminar fee covers the tuition, course materials, tea, snacks, lunch during the seminar sessions and a Master Class Certificate in Leadership and Management.

At this juncture, we wish to state that there were several delegates that were sponsored by their employers to participate in the programme.

Such organisations sponsor their employees for the value added importance derived from our executive education courses.

Such delegates did not receive an honorary doctorate degree even though they participated. Therefore, to state that Dr Mwamba paid for the award is not only incorrect but also misleading.

The Commonwealth University awarded Dr Mwamba the Doctor of Business Administration (Honoris Causa) i.e. for the sake of honour in recognition of his achievements.

Dr Mwamba is a renowned businessman of over 40 years with operations in Zambia, South Africa and Zimbabwe.
His businesses vary from food manufacturing, to freight transportation, grain trading and finally to real estate development.

The G.B.M. Group of companies owns one of the biggest milling companies in Zambia with a production capacity of 240 tons per day with expansion projects underway to increase capacity by a further 168 tons per day.

In Moky Mokuras book titled “Africa’s Greatest Entrepreneurs” Geoffrey was featured as one of the most dynamic business people operating in Africa.

This was alongside the likes of Prince Kofi Amoabeng, Mo Ibrahim and Strive Masiyiwa, to mention a few.

Aside from his business exploits, he has served the good people of Kasama Central at the National Assembly and was also Zambia’s Minister of Defence.

These achievements make Dr Mwamba a world renowned achiever, thus making him very deserving of the Commonwealth University Honorary Doctor of Business Administration.

We wish to affirm that we have confidence in our processes. We want to assure our esteemed alumni of the integrity of the awards that they have received.
