UPND vice president Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba’s son, Fortune Mwamba, has withdrawn his conditional bail application after he protested the K10, 000 bail money imposed by the Magistrate Court.

This is in a case in which Fortune, 40, the first born son of the opposition vice president has been charged with rape and is serving a contempt sentence at Chimbokaila Correctional Facility after jumping bail.

Lusaka Magistrate Alice Walusiku, however, granted a K10,00 bail following another application, in which Mwamba argued that the amount was too much as he was just a student who recently enrolled at a college on the Copperbelt.

“Take notice that I, Mwamba Bwalya, has withdrawn the review for bail variation I made in the High Court owing of the fact that I was ordered to pay K10,000 by the subordinate court.

“I wish to withdraw the case here (High Court) and pay the said amount at the Subordinate Court,” he submitted.

Fortune of unknown house number at Lusaka’s NAPSA Nyumba Yanga Complex in Lusaka, an auto mechanic by trade, was arrested in February for rape, but was out on bail.

He was, however, re-arrested on a bench warrant issued against him on 14th August, 2017 for non-appearance when he skipped court as he was out on bail.

After presenting his defence to the court, Magistrate Walusiku then granted a K10,00 bail which he protested as being too much as he was a student who recently enrolled at a Copperbelt college.

He has since withdrawn his application for conditional bail, and informed the court that he was ready to pay as ordered.

The alleged rape occurred on 25th December, 2016 in Lusaka.

He has argued that there was miscommunication between him and the court which led to him missing court appearance, but he has since withdrawn his bail review application.
