UPND DISOWNS MP BAMPI KAPALASA, OVER PETITION BEFORE THE CONCOURT RELATING TO THE ELIGIBILITY OF PRESIDENT EDGAR LUNGU

By NATOPN REPORTER

UPND has distanced itself from the petition before the Constitutional Court relating to the eligibility of President Edgar Lungu to contest the Republican Presidency in this year’s elections which was filed by Katuba Member of Parliament, Bampi Kapalasa.

UPND Secretary General, Batuke Imenda, said they were not aware of the court process and were not part of the case.

Mr Imenda said as far as UPND was concerned, President Lungu was not yet a candidate for elections.

He said the Electoral Commission of Zambia had published a calendar which shows allotted dates for petitions related to candidates.

“We deem such a case as premature until such a time that candidates finally file in nomination papers. Whatever Mr Kapalasa has done is purely in his personal capacity for which he is entitled as a citizen,” Mr. Imenda said.

He said should the party decide to petition any action related to the electoral process ahead of elections, laid down procedures as prescribed by law would be followed.
