Junkies terrorising residents – Tasila

By OLIVER SAMBOKO

PARLIAMENT yesterday heard that a gang of over 100 youths commonly known as junkies have been terrorising residents of Chawama and surrounding communities resulting in people in the area living in fear.

Patriotic Front Chawama Member of Parliament Tasila Lungu told Parliament yesterday that tension was brewing in the area as residents were contemplating taking the law in their own hands to deal with the criminals.

This prompted Speaker of National Assembly, Nelly Mutti to direct Home Affairs and Internal Security Minister, Jack Mwiimbu to explain to the nation what measures the government had put in place to arrest the situation.

And Mr Mwiimbu said Government was aware of the issue of junkies harassing the public in different parts of Lusaka including Chawama.

He said Government through his ministry was not going to sit idle and allow the security of the country and the people to degenerate, therefore his ministry was going put in place appropriate measures to bring the situation under control.

Mr Mwiimbu warned that as government moved to protect the people, there would be some inconveniences but appealed to the members of the public to bear with government.
