More call for legalisation of Kachasu

By KETRA KALUNGA

MORE stakeholders have joined calls to legalise Kachasu which has been brewed since before  independence as empowerment for people whose livelihood depend on producing the unregulated and unlicensed alcohol.

New Congress Party President, Peter Chanda said the government should consider legalising Kachasu production because the initiative if properly implemented could be a huge source of income for communities and the nation as a whole.

Pastor Chanda said in an interview that countries like China have developed not because of the large industries but through such initiatives which begin at a community level.

“The government should take such initiatives seriously and come up with a legalised and regulated Kachasu industry which could be a huge source of income at household and national level,” Pastor Chanda said.

And development activist, Dr Canisius Banda urged the government to register all Kachasu brewers in form of cooperatives and ensure that they undergo capacity building training.

Dr. Banda said the Kachasu cooperatives should work in partnership with the already established breweries for processing and packaging of the alcohol to set standards.

He said in a statement that the local authorities should train Kachasu brewers on hygiene and all requirements of public health needed during the brewing process.

Dr. Banda said entrepreneurship was the future of the country and Kachasu was a multi-million dollar industry if well implemented.
