THERE is need to address the implementation gaps on children’s rights in Zambia, particularly the realization of socio-economic rights, says Ndola district commissioner George Chisulo.

Mr Chisulo said the protection of children from all forms of violence ranging from gender inequality to protection from economic exploitation should be accelerated.

Officiating at the Day of an African Child in Ndola, whose theme is “Accelerating Protection, Empowerment and Equal Opportunities for children in Zambia by 2030 through Child Participation”, Mr Chisulo noted that the day helped to create awareness on the importance of children in their own issues.

“Awareness activities should take place that will be beneficial and of value to learners. The day presents an opportunity for all stakeholders on children’s rights, including the Government, non-governmental organisations and international agencies to reflect on issues affecting children on the African continent.

“With the commemoration of the day, Ndola has the opportunity to evaluate the progress made with regard to implementation of children’s rights and the challenges the nation continues to face towards the full realization of the rights of children in Africa,” he said.

Mr. Chisulo said equal opportunities required targeting all social and economic groups to ensure that no child is left behind with focus on prioritizing the rights and needs of the poorest and most marginalized.
