By ANDREW MUKOMA
AILWAYS Workers Union of Zambia (RWUZ) president Nathan Zulu has appealed to the Government to release funds towards the operations of Zambia Railways Limited (ZRL).

Mr Zulu noted that that ZRL has a number of challenges and urgently needed new wagons, new railway trucks and new locomotives.

He was speaking during the celebration to mark the one million tonnage achievement in Livingstone yesterday.

The RWUZ president said that if all was well, the company could achieve more, hence the need to recapitalize the railway firm.

“Government must a mechanism to ensure Zambia Railways limited operates very well. We also want government to put up 30 per cent to the union because it is the unionized workers who achieved such a tonnage.

“We have the challenges of locomotives, rail trucks, and wagons. We are appealing to the government to fund us to improve on our capacity,” he said.

Mr Zulu anticipated that for a complete overhaul to take place, the institution needed about K1billion

He said that for the ZRL to achieve the one million tonnage, it was because of hard work from workers.

The last time ZRL achieved a one million tonnage was in 2006.
