RESIDENTS of Kabwe’s Chililalila and David Ramusho wards are concerned over the deplorable state of Mwamba Road, a critical road that separates the two areas.

Speaking in separate interviews, the residents said the road was in a bad state and taxi drivers were refusing to be hired to go to both areas even during emergencies.

Bupe Mpundu of Chililalila ward said expectant mothers were faced with a serious challenge of transport because taxi drivers were refusing to use the road for fear of their vehicles getting stuck.

Ms Mpundu said if the road was not dealt with as soon as possible, it would defeat government’s policy of ensuring that every mother gives birth at the health institution.

She added that government’s effort in reducing maternal deaths would be derailed because most expectant mothers in Chililalila and David Ramusho wards would end up giving birth at homes.

“If this road is not worked on soon, expectant mothers in Chililalila and David Ramusho wards would be giving birth at home because taxi drivers are refusing to use the road saying their vehicles would be damaged,” said Mpundu.

Another resident, Kelvin Banda of David Ramusho ward said if Mwamba Road is not worked on soon, residents would have difficulties to rush their loved ones to hospitals in the event of an emergency such as a sudden illness among others.

The residents called on the relevant authorities to handle the matter with the seriousness it deserves, saying the importance of the road could not be overemphasised.

“We are calling on the councillors in Chililalila and David Ramusho wards to take this issue seriously because this road is important to us,” said Mr Banda.
