Catholic Church condemn  political arrests, detentions

THE Catholic Church in Eastern Province has raised alarm against the UPND government’s intolerance and mounting crusade of arresting its political opponents in a bid to silence dissent and the disappearance of Emmanuel Jay Banda, who on the early hours of Sunday was dumped in Kafue after undergoing torment through torture by unknown people.

The Catholic Church in Eastern Province is advising the UPND Government to focus its energy in addressing the critical concerns raised by citizens especially that of the cost of living.

Bishop of Chipata, Right Reverend George Lungu said in a pastoral statement yesterday that he was concerned about the deteriorating political environment in the nation and that he had a prophetic duty to comment on the happenings in the country. “I have noticed the growing trend of growing political intolerance as evidenced by political threats issued by both sides of the political divide in Zambia, UPND and the opposition.
