‘Africa has failed to exploit minerals to generate revenue’

By SHARON ZULU

EMERALD and Semi-Precious Stones Mining Association of Zambia (ESMAZ) has urged the wealthiest members of the African Union to work hand-in-hand with technical experts in pursuit of their shared goal of the continent’s comprehensive development.

ESMAZ president, Victor Kalesha, has expressed concern at the apparent lack of progress in fully exploiting the vast natural resources of the African continent, despite its abundance of precious stones, minerals and agricultural products.

Mr Kalesha noted that Africa is a treasure trove of natural resources yet, it has failed to fully tap into the vast potential of these resources, which could transform the continent and lift millions out of poverty.

He said Africa’s priorities are misplaced because most elites are more concerned with amassing personal wealth and status than empowering small-scale miners and liberating the continent from foreign exploitation.

“It is high time African leaders take charge of the continent’s destiny and prioritise its development because by doing so, the continent can become a model of growth and prosperity, not just for Africa but for the world at large,” he said.
