NETIZENS are demanding for long time serving Zambia Athletics Association (ZAA) president Elias Mpondela to resign from his post after Zambia’s failure to reap enough medals at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
Zambia only won a bronze through Muzala Samukonga in the 400 metres category.
Mpondela, who has been ZAA president close to 30 years, is now on the chopping board as people are demanding for his retirement from the sport.
According to comments observed online, citizens have demanded for his immediate resignation, saying they need new blood.
“One of the netizens, Kapembwa Ntinda said: “This is not only healthy for ZAA. But as a nation we need to allow fresh minds. Hon Minister Elvis Nkandu, this matter calls for your attention.”
Kennedy Peter Mubanga Malesu said: “I will challenge him it’s too much of him. This is not kingship were until one dies then he/she is replaced we need fresh and new minds to embrace change in sports for us to develop.”
Justine Kanyanta said: “Just retire there are a lot of young minds to win big trophies than pledging national fortunes on one individual.”
Brian Bravo Siamelika said: “Let young minds take up the mantle, and let him leave the stage while people are still clapping, he has done his part.”
Eve Mleta said: “If we had fresh minds. We will be minting six gold medals in 2024. North-Western Province has a number of good long distance runners.”
Shadreck Bwalya said: “It seems he is a life President for ZAAA. Serving for 30 years and still wants to add some four extra years, really! He needs to step down and allow others to take over from him. He has served enough for the organisation and Zambia in terms of athletics.”
