Small scale miners call for equal share of minerals

By BUUMBA CHIMBULU

THE Emerald and Semi-Precious Stones Mining Association of Zambia (ESMAZ) has called for equal share of mineral resources from Africa to ensure small scale miners benefit.

ESMAZ president, Victor Kalesha, said the association proposed that African mining giants should provide equipment, outsourcing and market access to small-scale miners.

Mr Kalesha expressed confidence that this would ensure a fair share of the mineral resources returned to Africa.

“It is time for Africa to protect its mineral resources and empower small-scale miners to sell their minerals at competitive prices through these African mining giants.

“Let us assemble African mining giants, Small scale miners, government officers and technocrats to discuss strategies for creating value for our minerals and guarding our resources,” he said in a statement.

Mr Kalesha call on the African Minerals Development Centre under the African Union to facilitate collaboration between African mining giants, such as Grizzly Mining Limited, with small-scale miners like ESMAZ.

He underscored that by sharing knowledge, resources and expertise, Africa’s mineral potential could be unlocked and ensure that the continent retained a significant share of its mineral wealth.

“We urge the government to recognize and support African success stories like Grizzly Mining Limited in developing the emerald sector in Zambia.

“Grizzly Mining Limited stands as a shining example of African ownership and investment in the mining sector. Together, we can awaken Africa’s sleeping giant and unleash its full potential,” Mr Kalesha said.
