Dear Editor,
I RECENTLY read in one of our local newspapers about the donation to Zambia of $20 million worth of GMO maize from the United States.
The truth of the matter is that this maize is not all that innocent because it is pure grotesque GMO.
I remember a few years ago when Washington donated yellow GMO maize to Zambia which President Levy Mwanawasa (MHSRIEP) flatly refused to accept because of the health risks it posed.
As expected, this did not go well with the Americans but President Mwanawasa stood his ground and the maize was sent back to the US.
But today, I doubt the current UPND regime can do the same, to reject this harmful American maize because it is already behaving like cold fish.
Knowing how much President Hakainde Hichilema loves Americans, this maize donation will truly end in the stomachs of unsuspecting Zambians who will later suffer from various kinds of diseases and consequently quickly take them to their local cemeteries.
My take on this American GMO maize is a big NO and the UPND government if it cares for the lives of Zambians should, like President Mwanawasa, say NO to this GMO maize.
For the majority of Zambians who may not know it, GMO foods main concerns involve allergies, cancer, toxicity, antibiotic resistance, immuno suppression and loss of nutrients among others.
So I will be the first Zambian to go through the roof if the so-called new dawn administration will allows this bad maize to land on the Zambian soil.
Zambia, for me, should not be turned into a stomping ground for fatal experiments of GMO foods. Please Zambians, let us not dance with death.
MUNROE CHISE,
