GOVERNMENT has appealed to private partnerships in its quest to alleviate hunger that has affected the country following the El Niño-induced droughts in the last farming season.
Rufunsa Member of Parliament Sheal Mulyata said the government alone cannot manage this battle but needs collective effort from every Zambian.
She was speaking when she received food hampers from the local Muslim Community.in
Ms. Mulyata, who is also Lusaka Province Minister commended the Muslim Social and Welfare Trust for their continued support to the government through various donations.
“I would like to thank and commend the gesture of our all-weather friends, the Muslim Community, for their massive support to this government and the people of this country. You have been there at all times, always ready to render help,” she said.
Receiving the donations on behalf of the community was Rufunsa District Commissioner, Richard Mabena, who also thanked the society for their selfless gesture.
Mr Mabena said the society’s selflessness transcends religious beliefs, as everyone benefitted from the donations.
He also encouraged them not to relent but to continue responding with the same generosity to other communities.
The Muslim Social and Welfare Trust launched its drought response campaign in Rufunsa, where they donated hampers worth K165, 000 to over 150 people.
The donated items included a 25 kg bag of mealie meal, a 5 kg bag of soya chunks, 5 kg of rice, 2 kg of sugar, 1 kg of salt, a 2.5-litre bottle of cooking oil, and a loaf of bread.
The campaign aims to supplement the government’s efforts in ensuring that people have access to food for survival during this challenging period.
Addressing the gathering, the Society Coordinator, Mr Mehtah Mubashir, expressed the society’s delight in donating food hampers to those in need. Mr. Mubashir said the society remains committed to supporting the government in various ways to ensure the welfare of the people is safeguarded at all costs.
He commended the UPND government for its leadership and for fostering a welcoming business environment.
