Tariff hike painful to Zambians – M’membe

SOCIALIST Party leader Mr Fred M’membe has criticized the recent hike in electricity tariffs, warning that it will lead to increased hardship for Zambians as commodity prices are expected to soar.
In a statement, yesterday, Dr M’membe said the tariff increase, effective November 1, 2024, shall affect even those exempted from paying higher rates, as businesses would have to absorb the 115 percent increase and subsequently raise their prices.
“The implication is that those using pressing irons, geysers, stoves, and any form of heating equipment will breach the 200 kWh threshold and will bear the costs for lights-only users,” Dr M’membe explained.
