Zambia drops on FIFA rankings

By BARNABAS ZULU
THE Chipolopolo, has seen a disappointing drop in the latest FIFA rankings, falling to 94th place from 93rd just a month earlier.
This decline comes despite a recent positive result, where they secured a win against Chad away in Yaoundé, Cameroon and managed to draw in their home match against the same opponent.
Such results highlight the ongoing struggles the team faces, particularly their inability to achieve convincing performances against lower-ranked teams like Chad.
The recent rankings reflect a concerning trend for Zambian football, showcasing a noticeable regression over the past year.
In June 2024, Zambia was ranked 86th, but they have since slipped eight places, indicating a significant slowdown in their international standing.
The inability to capitalise on home advantage, especially against teams perceived as weaker, raises questions about the team’s current form and strategy.
As Zambia prepares for critical fixtures against Ivory Coast and Sierra Leone next month, the latest ranking serves as a wake-up call.
On the African continent, Zambia ranks 18th, which reflects the competitive landscape of African football.
Countries such as Senegal, Egypt, and Morocco continue to dominate the top spots, making it imperative for Zambia to step up if they aspire to compete at a higher level.
Zambia’s recent drop in FIFA rankings underscores the challenges they face. With important fixtures on the horizon, it is essential for the Chipolopolo to focus on achieving better results to reverse their downward trend and secure a brighter future for Zambian football.
