A POLICE reserve officer who was also a part-time musician has died after being shot and wounded by fellow police officers who were investigating a rape case in which he was implicated, Spokesperson Esther Mwata Katongo has confirmed.

Ms. Katongo identified the deceased as Steven Nsomekela, 29, adding that he was shot on Friday around 18:00 hours. And Zambia Association of Musicians president Njoya Tembo confirmed that Mr. Nsomekela was also a part-time musician and collaborated with Exile, now Israel, on his hit Nkonkonko; using his stage name Steve B.

“Sometime back there was a rape case that was reported by a woman who was allegedly raped at gunpoint in a car by a person wearing police uniform. After she was raped the woman picked some document from the car without this person noticing.

“When she went to report the case to the police, she also presented the document that she had picked from the car. Investigations and information on the document pointed to this same person Steve B. Officers later picked him and went for recoveries at his home. They recovered a pistol and some police uniforms,” Ms. Katongo said.

She said while the officers were still there, Mr. Nsomekela attempted to jump over the fence but he was shot in the hip and later died on his way to UTH.
