MAN IN COURT FOR SWINDLING PASTOR CHOOLWE 1.5 MILLION

By CHARLES MUSONDA

THE Lusaka Magistrates’ Court has set May 13, 2022 as date for commencement of trial in a case a businessman has been charged for allegedly swindling renowned clergyman Pastor Choolwe Mudenda out of K1, 545, 000 in an alleged fake house sale.

Before Magistrate Jenifer Bwalya yesterday was Joseph Banda, 35, of Lusaka’s Chilenje Township, who has denied one count of obtaining money by false pretence, contrary to Section 303 of the Penal Code Chapter 87 of the laws of Zambia.

Particulars of offence are that on unknown dates but between August 1, 2019 and December 31, 2020 in Lusaka with intent to deceive or defraud, Banda obtained K1, 545, 000 from Pastor Choolwe Mudenda, founder and president of Gospel Envoys, by pretending that he had a house for sale when in fact not.

Banda, who has denied the charge, appeared for setting of trial dates and has been remanded in custody. He will appear next April 4, 2022 for mention.

In the same court, a Chinese businessman has been found with a case to answer for theft involving a mobile phone worth K4, 800.

Magistrate Bwalya yesterday put Ye Delian, 38, on his defence for theft contrary to Section 272 of the Penal Code Chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia.

She said after considering the evidence, she found that Ye has a case to answer and put him on his defence because there is some evidence touching on him and on which he needs to defend himself.
