THE Zambia netball team will return home as mere participants at the Africa netball championships after bitter rivals Malawi shattered their hopes of winning the title on Wednesday evening in Uganda.

Zambia lost 49-51 to Malawi in a tightly contested match and faced the reality of missing on the title.

This was Zambia’s second loss at the tournament after the 58-59 defeat to defending champions Zimbabwe.

The first half of the Malawi match ended even on 24-24 as both teams exhibited excellent skills on the court. But Malawi returned rejuvenated and scored the three important goals to record their third victory of the competition.

Zambia was yesterday evening scheduled to play their last game against hosts Uganda.

Uganda’s She-Cranes beat Zimbabwe 61-45 to record their fourth straight win and extend their lead on the log with eight points.

Malawi was second with six points and trailing behind was Zambia and Zimbabwe on four points, Botswana two and Namibia zero.

Zambian coach Charles Zulu described the loss as painful because his lasses put in their best but said it was not just Zambia’s day.

“It is sad that we will not meet the objective of winning the title. All in all, the lasses put in their best looking at the margin in the scores,” he said.

Zambia has never won the African championship.
