MOTORISTS using Burma road have appealed to Lusaka City Council to quickly repair the solar street lights that have not been working for almost a month now.

Bernard Chanda, a motorist, said the road was no longer safe because criminals were using the darkness to attack motorists by grabbing things from vehicles especially when stopping at traffic lights.

Mr Chanda said if the problem remained unattended vandals will take advantage and start damaging the street lights and poles which would be a drawback to the council.

Another motorist Jerald Maswau said streets kids were also stoning vehicles and putting obstacles on the road so that once a driver stopped they would be robbed.

Mr Maswau said the council should move in quickly and repair the lights because street kids were taking advantage of the darkness to conduct illegal activities.

And Nambela Siyanga, a motorist, said the installation of the street lights along the busy road was a welcome move and a sign of development in the constituency.

She said it was not the responsibility of the council alone to take responsibility for the facilities that were being put up but that the public too should ensure that they looked after them.

“”I think as citizens we should take it as our duty to ensure that we look after these street lights as if they were in our own yards for Chawama is home for a lot of us and hence the need to protect public property from damage,’’ she said.
