OWNERS OF FAULTY BILLBOARDS TO BE PENALISED – NDOLA CITY COUNCIL

THE Ndola City Council has warned that owners of billboards will face penalties in an event that a billboard collapsed or caused damage to the public.
The council through the department of engineering said it was undertaking a billboard inspection exercise to ascertain the stability of billboards in the city.
Director of Engineering Services Elias Mwalaba said that the local authority wanted to ensure that the billboards in the city were stable.
He said the advertising agencies and billboard owners should also ensure that their structures were state to avoid the risk of collapsing.
“We implore billboard owners to have their designs approved by the Council prior to erecting the billboards.
“We have noticed through inspection that some billboards have been found faulty and the owners have been directed to rectify the problems within a day,” he said.
Mr Mwalaba said owners of billboards would bear any penalties in an event that a billboard collapsed or caused damage.
He said the Council would soon work on standardised structural designs of billboards that everyone would be expected to adhere to.
He said the council through the Local Government Act was mandated to inspect structures such as billboards and that the owners were responsible for the safety of such structures.
