Mwenye Musenge, the Chimwemwe lawmaker under the NRPUP said during his maiden speech in Parliament on Tuesday that while President Hakainde Hichilema was being congratulated for winning the disputed August 13, general election, concerns about the credibility of the election still lingered on. “The people of Chimwemwe have asked me to place on record their deep concern on the results announced in our constituency. The people of Chimwemwe are questioning the results attributed to President Hakainde Hichilema. “They contend that according to the figures they witnessed at the constituency tallying centre reported by the Returning Office a Mr Halubono, the votes attributed to Mr Mr Hichilema, there was approximately 10,000 and they are asking where that additional votes came from,” Mr Musenge said. The Member of Parliament’s remarks drew a sharp reaction from his colleagues from the UPND prompting First Deputy Speaker Malungo Chisangano to intervene. She said: “Members, can we concentrate on giving maiden speech and not going into details about how the elections were. Moreover, President Hichilema has told us that the elections are over. So, the Chimwemwe MP can you take another direction to present your speech.” But Mr Musenge maintained that he firmly believed that where citizens raised concerns about their votes, such questions should be addressed through transparent and verifiable electoral records. He said if indeed there were incidents where people raised concerns, such issues must be resolved. ENDS
