Nkana edge Bonanza, depose Nchanga to reclaim Quad golf title

NKANA Golf Club at the weekend reclaimed the prestigious Zambia Golf Union (ZGU) National Quadrangular championship played at Lusaka Golf Club.
Nkana, who last won the title three years ago, upstaged holders Nchanga Golf Club.
Nkana polled 74 points to lift the trophy and a K15, 000 cash prize.
Led by their general manager Marlon Kananda, the team broke into singing after the trophy was handed over to their team captain, David Mensah.
Kananda said winning the “Quad” was a major achievement for Nkana.
“It is a reflection of the strength and depth of our membership, the commitment of our players, and the team spirit within the club,” he said.
Kananda said to come out on top in a competition of that nature requires not only individual talent, but consistency, preparation and the ability to perform under pressure.
“This victory is therefore something the entire Nkana Golf Club family can be proud of,” he said.
Nkana later hosted a victory party at Chainama Hills Golf Club.
Bonanza Golf Club were the surprise package after finishing as runners up, ahead of Mazabuka and Nchanga.
Bonanza, “bridesmaids” in previous editions, defied the old order by punching above their weight and carded 63 points.
Bonanza team captain Shannon Joynt thanked ZGU president Mohamed Bhagoo for his continuous leadership of the union, describing the Quadrangular as “the top event for the clubs.”
Joynt also thanked Lusaka Golf Club for hosting the tournament and for the work put into maintaining the course.
“We picked the right team,” he said.
“Your commitment and strength took us to a strong second-place finish, and I thank you for it. Over the last two years I’ve watched Bonanza Golf Club grow into a real force, and I couldn’t be prouder of the tenacity and energy this team showed today,” Joynt said.
Bonanza received K10, 000 for their spirited run.
Mazabuka who shot 45 points to finish third got K7, 500 while Nchanga, winners of the previous edition, were tailenders at 34 points and walked away with K5, 000.
