ONE supporter died and 27 other passengers seriously injured when a Hino truck transporting Chikankata District-based Division Two Zone D Nanduba Football Club to a football match was involved in a road traffic accident in Mazabuka at the weekend.

The Hino truck, which was carrying 47 passengers—including players, club officials, team officials and supporters—overturned while ferrying the team to a week 10 a league game match against Zesco Mazabuka.

According to Southern Province FAZ General Secretary Stanford Kabwata the accident happened in Mazabuka near the roundabout, next to Engine Filling Station.

“We regret to announce that the accident resulted in 27 injuries and the death of one supporter, Mr. Chipengo Kabosha. His next of kin have been informed and met with FAZ and club officials at the hospital,” Kabwata said.

“Of the injured, 18 are admitted to hospital for medical attention. Out of the 18, three are players, three are officials, while the rest are supporters. One supporter is currently in theater. The remaining individuals have been transported back to their homes,” Kabwata said.

He said the exact cause of the accident will be officially confirmed once the Zambia Police Service releases their report.

“However, preliminary information suggests a failure of the breaking system on the Hino truck used for transport,” Kabwata said.

The Southern Province FAZ has since extended its deepest condolences to the family of the deceased.

“We pray that the Almighty God grants them strength, comfort, and peace during this difficult time. To Nanduba Football Club, we stand with you in this moment of grief and urge you to remain strong and united as a family. We also wish a speedy recovery to all those injured—our thoughts and prayers are with each one of you,” Kabwata said.

He said FAZ Southern Province was in close contact with the club and hospital authorities to monitor the situation while the football family will continue to receive updates.
